Horse Racing Betting: Belmont Stakes Under Card Betting - Acorn Stakes

The Acorn Stakes will be the final under card race covered by ESPN in preparation of the 2009
Belmont Stakes. It will be the ninth race on the card today at Belmont Park, and post-time is at approximately
4: Funny Moon (8-1): Today, you’re getting a tremendous price on the #4 horse, Funny Moon. Jockey Alan Garcia is one of the best jockeys in the state of New York, and has had a fantastic history at Belmont Park. This filly only has three races in her young career, but she has done something that none of these other fillies have: Win in the rain. The track is probably going to be wet this afternoon, and Funny Moon has two wins in as many tries on the wet dirt. On May 7th, she won a 1 mile race at Belmont by three lengths against a relatively weak field. She hasn’t faced a set of fillies like this quite yet, but there’s no doubt that she has the talent to run with the big girls. Her wet dirt experience may prove invaluable today.

8: Justwhistledixie (8-5): It’s hard to argue with a horse that has five wins and two shows in seven career starts, especially when those five wins in her L/5 races. That’s why the oddsmakers have lined Justwhistledixie the morning line favorite. She won her only career race at Belmont back on October 13th, besting a fairly competitive field by a whopping seven lengths. The potential problem is that the jockey that day was Alan Garcia, who is now riding Funny Moon. This will be the second straight mount for Julien Leparoux, who rode her to victory by 1 ¾ lengths against a bunch of other solid horses, including Casanova Move, who will start on the far inside in this race. In her L/5 races, Justwhistledixie has been fantastic down the stretch of races, so if she finds herself in decent stalking position early, she’ll be right there at the wire.

5: Doremifasollatido (6-1): Doremifasollatido is the only New York bred horse in this nine-filly field. The musically-named filly has had a good career at Belmont and is very familiar with the grounds. She has two wins and two places to her credit there, including May 15th’s second place finish in the Fall Aspen Stakes. No one (save perhaps Rachel Alexandra) would’ve had a shot of running down Light Green that day, who won by eight lengths. The biggest question for this filly is whether she can run the full mile. She hasn’t run the full mile since going 1 1/16 miles at the Juvenile Filly. She finished 10th out of 13 fillies that day, losing out by 13 lengths. Doremifasollatido should be in a decent stalking position early, but there’s a big question as to whether or not she’ll be able to stay near the front. With a strong effort, she very could well find the money.

Selection: 4-8-5
