Joe Jonas Shouts Out All the 'Single Ladies'; #philspector Was A Phony; R.I.P. Koko Taylor

Thursday"

Headlines: Joe Jonas shouldaputa unitard and heels on much, much sooner. Good look for him, even if Justin Timberlake got there months and months ago with his own Beyonce tribute/spoof. And Timberlake, unlike Jonas, actually knew the words to "Single Ladies." ... So yeah, that Phil Spector Twitter account I mentioned yesterday? Way fake. Phony Phil fessed up yesterday, writing: "I made this account as a joke. Befriending a cockroach? c'mon folks even Phil's not that crazy." #philspector has since been scrubbed by the Twitter overlords. ... Chicago blues legend Koko Taylor is now singing "Wang Dang Doodle" at the great blues bar in the sky. (The one on the South Side, natch.) ... Mandy Moore is determined to prove that she is not, in fact, anything like Britney, Xtina and the other pop tarts to whom she was originally compared. ... Live Nation's single-day service-fee elimination for lawn tickets to its amphitheater shows wasn't totally a fee-free day, says Pollstar: "A quick review of the offerings on the LN site found plenty of other charges still tacked on to tickets that fell under the promo, including parking, facility, charity and ticket taxes that ranged from 25 cents to $8." ... Eminem confirms that he was totally in on the joke when Sascha Baron Cohen landed crotch-first on his face at the MTV Movie Awards. ... The guitarist for Christian metal band Stryper is marrying the former prostitute who founded Hookers for Jesus. ... Kanye West gets "Paranoid" with Rihanna. ... Coldplay's Chis Martin has completely ruled out a solo album. I would include an insulting aside here, but I kind of changed my mind about Coldplay with the release of last year's "Viva la Vida." ... Trade mag Radio & Records has gone poof. So, too, has Performing Songwriter. ... A headline I never expected to read: "Snoop Dogg Produces Johnny Cash Remix Album." Huh.

They Never Saw the Baltimore Orioles Coming

Everybody is a baseball expert. Has there ever been a fan that didn't think he could manage his team better than its manager?

Just listen to talk radio for a few minutes. The truth is that nobody is a baseball expert.

Arthur Daley Was a Great Baseball Writer

Arthur Daley joined the New York Times in 1926. He was a baseball columnist for 31 years, starting in 1942. In 1956, he became the first sportswriter to win a Pulitzer Prize.

Arthur Daley never claimed to be a baseball expert, but he certainly knew baseball, and a column he wrote before the 1966 World Series serves as a template for all who do consider them baseball prognosticators.

The Experienced, Favored Dodgers

The young Baltimore Orioles were facing an experienced Los Angeles Dodgers' team that had finished second in 1962, swept the Yankees in 1963, finished out of contention is 1964, but that bounced back to beat the Twins in the 1965 World Series.

The experts, including Arthur Daley, gave the Orioles little chance of winning more than a game or two.

Koufax and Drysdale vs. McNally and Palmer

The Series would open in Los Angeles with Don Drysdale facing young Dave McNally. Game 2 would pit Sandy Koufax against Jim Palmer, who was not yet 21 years old.

Daley wrote "Good pitching, the experts insist, will invariably negate good hitting and the Dodgers have the arms to lend substance to that theory. It was pitching that got them where they are today and it could sweep them through the series so fast it would shrivel every crab cake in Baltimore."

Sandy Koufax was coming off a season which was one of the greatest any pitcher ever had. He was 27-9 with a 1.73 ERA, 27 complete games, 317 strikeouts, and a 190 ERA+.

Don Drysdale, however, had a poor season, losing more than he won (13-16). He had a high ERA of 3.42 for those days, and his ERA+ was 96.

Dave McNally won 13 games and Jim Palmer won 15. It seemed as if they were no match for Los Angeles.

The Orioles' Were Mediocre After July

Arthur Daley thought that the Orioles' timing was bad.

"If they had played it in July, they probably would have been favorites. At the halfway mark the Baltimores had torn their league apart. Steve Barber was heading for a 20 game year, and everything clicked handsomely for Hank Bauer, the manager with the Midas touch."

Steve Barber developed tendonitis and would not pitch against the Dodgers. The Orioles played .500 ball the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles struggled most of the season, and only Koufax' dominance kept them in contention with the Giants and Pirates. The Dodgers finally took over first on Sept. 11.

The Orioles Superior Offense

The Orioles had the superior offense team, led by Triple Crown winner Frank Robinson, who hit 49 home runs. Boog Powell had 34 home runs with 109 RBIs, and Brooks Robinson had 23 home runs with 100 RBIs.

Many of the experts felt that since both Chavez Ravine and Memorial Stadium were large ballparks, the Orioles' edge in offense was less important than the Dodgers' pitching advantage.

Microsoft offers unworkable solution to Bing porn

Microsoft offers unworkable solution to Bing porn

by Larry Magid
As I pointed out in an earlier post, searching for certain terms on Microsoft's new Bing.com search engine brings up videos that display hardcore porn within the Web site and because the porn is playing within Bing instead of the site where it's hosted, the videos are not necessarily blocked by parental control filters. And monitoring programs designed to tell parents where their kids have been are likely to simply report Bing.com instead of the site that actually hosts the video.

As Tom Krazit pointed out, Microsoft has responded to the issue in a blog post Thursday. That post is defensive--"we think our current search safety settings are solid"--but it does acknowledge "we also are listening to customers, and some have told us they want more control and they want it now."

The company says that it has a "short term workaround" but not only do I find the description of the workaround incomprehensible, I couldn't get it to work even while on the phone with a Microsoft executive. If you can figure out how to implement these instructions, please let me know:

So for right now, we wanted to let people know that you can add "adlt=strict" to the end of a query and no matter what the settings are for that session, it will return results as if safe search was set to strict. The query would look like this: http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=adulttermgoeshere&adlt=strict (yes it is case sensitive)."

But even if this can be made to work, it might help companies prevent employees from viewing porn but doesn't even begin to address the concerns of parents who don't want their kids playing porn movies from within the search engine of the world's largest software company.

To its credit Microsoft does have a "SafeSearch" option that does not bring up porn. In fact, it's the default setting. The problem is that if someone searches for an adult term with the setting on strict or moderate, they immediately get an invitation to "change your SafeSearch setting" right there on the screen. I love things that are user-friendly but, for kids, that may be a bit too user-friendly. At the very least, Microsoft would be better off following Google's example by requiring the user to manually go into the preference area to change the settings. It wouldn't stop a cybersavvy teen from finding porn, but it would at least slow them down a bit. And it probably would stop younger users from finding it. Another solution would be to have a family version of Bing with a different URL. The best solution is probably simply not to let porn videos play within Bing.

I'm not suggesting there is a silver bullet to this problem and I understand that Microsoft may have been caught by surprise over this, but it strikes me that a solution can be found and quickly implemented.

In the meantime I did get an e-mail today from Microsoft's Chuck Cosson telling me, "today we provided filtering companies as well as network administrators with a simple solution for restricting Bing to filtered searches." And he added, "while we give some further thought to Bing, I think it's also still our thinking that safe search settings on a single search engine can't substitute for a complete parental control offering--one reason to work with the filtering companies for example, but also that will inform how we respond here over time."

I agree. I don't think it's appropriate to demand that Microsoft make its search engine entirely kid-friendly. Porn may be inappropriate for kids and distasteful to some, but the type of porn you find on Bing is legal material and adults should have a right to search for it. I think parents do have the responsibility to set and enforce rules for their kids and, in some cases, monitor what their kids are doing online. But I also think Microsoft needs to put a bit more thought into how it can better empower parents to shield their kids from inappropriate material without censoring search results for adults. This may not be easy but it is possible.

Horse Racing Betting: Belmont Stakes Under Card Betting - Acorn Stakes

The Acorn Stakes will be the final under card race covered by ESPN in preparation of the 2009
Belmont Stakes. It will be the ninth race on the card today at Belmont Park, and post-time is at approximately
4: Funny Moon (8-1): Today, you’re getting a tremendous price on the #4 horse, Funny Moon. Jockey Alan Garcia is one of the best jockeys in the state of New York, and has had a fantastic history at Belmont Park. This filly only has three races in her young career, but she has done something that none of these other fillies have: Win in the rain. The track is probably going to be wet this afternoon, and Funny Moon has two wins in as many tries on the wet dirt. On May 7th, she won a 1 mile race at Belmont by three lengths against a relatively weak field. She hasn’t faced a set of fillies like this quite yet, but there’s no doubt that she has the talent to run with the big girls. Her wet dirt experience may prove invaluable today.

8: Justwhistledixie (8-5): It’s hard to argue with a horse that has five wins and two shows in seven career starts, especially when those five wins in her L/5 races. That’s why the oddsmakers have lined Justwhistledixie the morning line favorite. She won her only career race at Belmont back on October 13th, besting a fairly competitive field by a whopping seven lengths. The potential problem is that the jockey that day was Alan Garcia, who is now riding Funny Moon. This will be the second straight mount for Julien Leparoux, who rode her to victory by 1 ¾ lengths against a bunch of other solid horses, including Casanova Move, who will start on the far inside in this race. In her L/5 races, Justwhistledixie has been fantastic down the stretch of races, so if she finds herself in decent stalking position early, she’ll be right there at the wire.

5: Doremifasollatido (6-1): Doremifasollatido is the only New York bred horse in this nine-filly field. The musically-named filly has had a good career at Belmont and is very familiar with the grounds. She has two wins and two places to her credit there, including May 15th’s second place finish in the Fall Aspen Stakes. No one (save perhaps Rachel Alexandra) would’ve had a shot of running down Light Green that day, who won by eight lengths. The biggest question for this filly is whether she can run the full mile. She hasn’t run the full mile since going 1 1/16 miles at the Juvenile Filly. She finished 10th out of 13 fillies that day, losing out by 13 lengths. Doremifasollatido should be in a decent stalking position early, but there’s a big question as to whether or not she’ll be able to stay near the front. With a strong effort, she very could well find the money.
